A moment of 'working out loud' where the artist in residence, Joshua Glass, will present his in-progress artistic research on the intersection of nature connection and regenerative culture.

After 8 days of exploration, Joshua will share insights and drawings on the topic. He will invite us for an experience of nature connection and inter-personal inquiry in the forest of Moinhos do Dão Eco Quinta.

Join us for a deep dive into curiosity, conversation, nature connection, and of course, tea and cake J

Essential information:

  • Location of the presentation: Moinhos do Dão Eco Quinta. The quinta is accessible by car from the village Vila Garcia (directions here) You can also choose to park your car by the nearby Monastery and enjoy the 20 min walk down into the Dão valley.
  • Date and time: Sunday September 25, 16:00 till 18:00
  • Bring clothes for rainand footwearfor a short forest walk. The outdoor part of the presentation will occur rain or shine.

About the artist
The work of Joshua Glass elaborates on the intersection of performance art + social experimentation + nature connection. He designs his offerings to be embodied so we can practice:

  • exchanging with non-humans
  • reviewing the boundaries of self and other
  • coexisting in community

Recently, Joshua has produced participatory performances, community-building events, artistic installations, workshops, and a non-profit organization called The Treehouse Maastricht. The Treehouse was co-founded in 2018 in the Netherlands as a public coffeehouse for developing emotional integrity and silliness in the context of deep community. With The Treehouse, Joshua researched and implemented dynamic governance, microsolidarity (mutual-aid), and socially experimental dinners. In 2020, Joshua graduated from the Interdisciplinary Arts program at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Currently, he's loosely based in Amsterdam.

While in residence at Moinhos do Dão, Joshua has continued his research within themes of regenerative culture, nature connection, and social design. He's been exploring questions including:

  • Which nature-based practices strengthen a palpable, personal relationship with non-human beings?
  • What's a regenerative lifestyle, why's it important, and how can I live one?
  • How can I access and trust animate intelligence (i.e. non-rational) and foster an integrated intelligence to guide my actions?

If I had one sentence to describe what my residency at Moinhos do Dão has brought me it would be this one: ‘Moinhos do Dão has awakened my senses’

Fortunately I have a few more.

After two years of being graduated from art school, I was searching for some rest and peace, in the restless career I chose for. When at home (Amsterdam) I always feel like I’m running and doing nothing at the same time. I felt I needed some time away from my beloved people and city, that bring me a whole bunch of joy and distraction.

While here I created a daily routine for myself, it went like this:

reading
breakfast
walking
coffee
reading
walking
swimming
lunch
practicing Portuguese
painting/drawing
reading
cooking
dinner
reading
sleeping

(I occasionally took a shower, checked my e-mail and did the dishes too.)

What became most clear to me during my weeks at the Moinhos, is that I feel healthier when there are less decisions to make, that beauty is always around, and that nothing is ever the same. I walked the same path to the village every day, and every day, there would be something new to see, to smell, or feel.
Every day something else would attract me to its beauty. One day it would be a leaf, the other day a plastic bottle with a bright yellow top in front of a concrete wall, and another day it would be a smiling woman with crooked teeth.

Being here has showed me again that beauty is always around, and that it’s easier to find it when there is not too much distraction. I think that as an artist it is very important to remind myself, that in moments I don’t find inspiration, all I have to do is change my focus, take a closer look, or widen my view.

For the month of September of 2015, the MdD hoted Jalinka Gressmann (website) , as well as Beckey Kaye (website), as Artists in Residence.

Both artists worked on developing images and objects—as well as a relationship—to the environment of the Moinhos do Dão.  Each explored new techniques in materials use and reflected both on the Nature at the MdD (and/or the Self as it exists in Nature or a natural environment).

2015 - September AiRs Jalinka Gresmann and Beckey Kaye

Their 1-month stays culminated in an Open Atelier Day on the MdD (plus an Artist’s Talk at the Viseu Polytechnical School):

Below is a selection of art work and statement about the practice of Jalinka Gressmann (NL):

Is a visual artist living and working in Amsterdam, with a background in commercial creative studies (Cibap 1998) and a Bachelor in fine arts (HKU 2004). Combining her knowledge and diverse experience, whilst wrestling with structure & time, it results in a mix of patterns, compositions and combinations. Jalinka enjoys getting lost in details and finding the beauty in everything, extending borders or connecting them, and always questioning everything. Her main focus is focus; losing it, looking for it, grasping it and letting go. Her art is a spontaneous manifestation of her vision, always developing in an experimental and playful way. The results are to be seen in her mixed media art.

Furthermore, below is a selection of artwork and the proposal submitted by Beckey Kaye (USA) for her interest in the residency at the MdD:

Continuing with my exploration of animal architecture, I am currently fascinated by insects as creators of their own worlds. The ambiguous boundary between outer world (environment) and inner world (the body) is best demonstrated by cocoons. Insects often use the physical components of their environment to build an auxiliary exoskeleton for insurance of proper incubation and metamorphosis. The materials, structure and body become integral. With a residency at Moinhos Do Dao, I would scavenge through the remnants of the environment to create a cocoon-like form. I would like the chrysalis to be unique in texture, palette and tone. The mixed media sculpture will include an opening for the viewer to peer inside. This cocoon will play with the notion of inner and outer worlds as it will serve as a contemplation of what is kept near and what functions as a protective barrier.

For the month of August in 2015, the MdD hosted Karen van de Vliet (website) as Artist in Residence.  Below are images from here studio-based investigations of drawing the many varieties of grasses found on the MdD terrain.  She commented on her residency:

At Moinhos do Dão, I became fascinated by the dried grasses and remnants of flowers in the fields. I see them as small dry accessories and they have become the subject of my work here. Looking very closely at their shapes and lines brought back my interest in drawing. I have been trying out different ways of drawing the plants and I am experimenting with ways to integrate these drawings in my paintings.

Karen described her initial project ideas here:

I will use the AiR to focus on drawing, photographing and painting everything that is located on or around the MdD . The landscape as a whole but also studies of plants, flowers and trees. This material will be a basis for my paintings I am planning to do during the stay and when I am back in my Studio in Rotterdam.
